Will Newport Beach Residents Get To Vote On the City Proposed Housing Element Plan?
The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is requiring the city of Newport Beach to support the building of 4,845 more housing units as its obligation under the state’s new affordable housing law.
Newport Beach City Councilmembers are now considering a radical Housing Plan that would allow the building of nearly 20,000 additional housing units in Newport Beach – four times greater than the amount required by the state!
Section 423 of the Newport Beach City Charter – the so-called “Greenlight Provision” – requires a vote of the people to adopt Land Use Element Updates and Zoning Amendments.
Mayor Will O’Neill in his June “Mayor’s Corner” column agreed that a public vote is needed on the Housing Element Plan.
Unfortunately, Councilman Noah Blom and his large developer allies are seeking to violate the City Charter and deny residents the right to vote on their Radical Housing Element Plan – which would bring over 30,000 more people to Newport Beach and severely overcrowd local streets and schools.
Other councilmembers are being pressured to create a phony loophole in the CityCharter at the July 23rd council meeting and adopt their Housing Element PlanWITHOUT a vote of the people.
Californians for a Better Future urges Newport Beach residents to make theirvoices heard by contacting the City Council at 949-644-3004 or send them anemail today at: citycouncil@newportbeachca.gov.
Tell Councilmember to support a vote of the people this November on the city’sproposed Housing Element Plan.
